Visiting Artists & Scholars

The Forst Endowment helps us bring nationally and internationally recognized artists from the Northwest and beyond to the Pullman campus where they present public lectures, conduct creative seminars, and meet with students. Often, visiting artists will exhibit or create an installation in Gallery II and provide students with opportunities to collaborate or assist. Their diverse voices and perspectives add texture to the fabric of the WSU community.

Visiting Artists and Scholars Fall 2018 / Spring 2019

The Body: Power, Meaning & Representation in Contemporary Art
Washington State University’s Department of Fine Arts is pleased to present the 2018-2019 Fine Arts Season of thematic programming focused on the human body. The human body has always played a central role in art. Artistic representations of the body are found in nearly every culture in the world. Today, many artists are pushing beyond representation and beyond the classical traditions of paint and marble to utilize new technologies such as digital media, and new strategies such as performance and social practice. While authority over the human body has long been determined by gender and class, in today’s highly globalized and pluralistic contemporary art world, artists view the body as a malleable site of meaning and power, not as an archetype but as a performative instrument, a vessel to be filled and surface upon which the artist or viewer may project her own fears, desires and dreams.

Through a variety of exhibitions, lectures and performances by international artists and scholars, the WSU Department of Fine Arts presents a diverse group of artists and scholars who use the body to create radical representations, re-imaginings and abstractions of the human form.

Visiting Artists and Scholars Fall 2017 / Spring 2018

Washington State University Department of Fine Arts proudly presents Shifting Landscapes: 2017-18 Fine Arts Season. Each year, the Department of Fine Arts organizes a robust series of visiting artist talks and gallery exhibitions around a common theme. This year, artists are considering our ever-changing environment. The idea of Shifting Landscapes is understood broadly, engaging varied academic disciplines and critical contexts such as global climate change, industrial and technological revolutions, politics and culture. Students, faculty and the public are invited to share in an open-minded dialogue about the world around us sparked by presentations and exhibitions by a diverse range of artists and artist groups including Carlos Castellanos, Signal Fire, Jeffry Mitchell, Mark Dorf, Kim Stringfellow and Wendy Red Star. All events are free to attend, supported by the Forst Fund.
