SUMMARY:Lien Truong Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Lien Truong’s art practice examines the social and cultural influences that shape belief systems and heritage. Landscapes symbolizing violence and tragedy; and significant American icons in the civil rights movement are translated through oil paint and painting on silk. Through a type of blended narrative painting\, the work is created through a hybridity of painting materials\, techniques and philosophies\, embedding in it\, the complex cultural histories that mirror the Asian American lens. \nLien Truong is an associate professor of painting and drawing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her work has been included in national and international exhibitions\, including the National Portrait Gallery. She has received reviews and mentions in Art Asia Pacific\, The San Francisco Chronicle; Houston Chronicle; Oakland Tribune; New American Paintings\, and ARTit Japan. Truong is a recipient of a 2019 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant. \nVirtual lecture on Thursday\, November 19th\, at 4:30pm via Zoom \nPre-register for the webinar here: \nhttps://wsu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_WLh6HtFSSM-J77fHhTmslA

SUMMARY:TRIBUTTE Reception
DESCRIPTION:TRIBUTTE \nA pop-up group exhibition of provisional art works created at Kamiak Butte and the Palouse  \n  \nFor this show\, MFA graduate students enrolled in FA 555 Critical Practices go to Kamiak Butte with minimal materials. Artists are asked to respond to the environment in an intuitive manner for approximately three hours\, working mostly in groups. In the following days\, artists edit and organize their ideas for installation. The result is a quirky and quick tribute to the Butte and surrounding landscape. Additionally\, for this show artists will be presenting a collaborative zine: Hidden Gems of the Palouse for Contemporary Artists\, Volume 1. Taken together\, these works showcase the ways severe restrictions in time and location can foster collaboration\, curiosity and ingenuity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition & Lecture: Joe Hedges
DESCRIPTION:Joe Hedges\, painting and intermedia professor\, is showing a new body of innovative intermedia art works\, sponsored by the WSU New Faculty Seed Grant. These “hyper combines” include oil painting and new media objects such as flat screen televisions and tablets. These works obfuscate the physical and conceptual boundaries between media to make comments on specific challenges of the digital age. Joe Hedges will be giving an artist lecture on August 29 at 4:30pm in the Art Department. \n  \nJoe Hedges: Hyper Combines \nAug 19 – Sept 20 in Fine Arts Gallery 2\, Pullman \nAug 29 | Lecture 4:30pm\, Reception 5:30pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium\, 5062

SUMMARY:Layers\, Land\, and Labor opens at WSU Fine Arts Locker Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Layers\, Land\, and Labor\nNew Work from JJ Harty\, Michael Yellowbear Holloman\, and Krista Brand \nLayers\, Land\, and Labor investigates contemporary landscapes in layers revealing objects\, detritus\, spirit\, and work. Each of the artists featured brings a unique perspective of observation\, from the mundane to the metaphysical. JJ Harty’s sculpture looks to reconsider analog and mechanical objects perceived as obsolete as well as spaces found within our decaying infrastructure. Michael Yellowbear Holloman uses color and movement in landscape painting to engage the viewer’s own emotional relationship with the natural world\, while invoking color schemes and compositions that reflect on the spiritual and oral traditions of the Plateau tribes of the Columbia river.Krista Brand’s installation\, drawings\, and ceramic sculpture challenge the viewer to look a little closer\, to notice our complicit shuffling of things from one place to the next\, and to value the labor of those who maintain objects and places. \n  \nLocation: \nWSU Fine Arts Locker Gallery\, Pullman Campus\, July 12 – August 23 \nOpening Reception July 12 from 5:30-7:30pm \nart.wsu.edu

SUMMARY:AIM • LESS Juried Exhibition Reception Event
DESCRIPTION:On view: March 4\, 2019 – March 29\, 2019. \nThere will be a performance and reception event held on Thursday\, March 21 from 4:30pm-5:30pm at WSU Fine Arts Gallery 2. \nWSU Department of Fine Arts presents a juried exhibition exploring ideas around the theme of aimlessness\, or to “aim less\,” and its relationship to space\, process\, and representation. Aimlessness inherently speaks to the objectless\, and action without purpose. These artists interpret the qualities of what is to be aimless while considering the subversive nature of aiming less in our contemporary culture. We offer a moment to explore a parallel path while investigating expectation\, spontaneity\, liminality\, desolation\, and liberation. Featuring works across various media\, including photography\, painting\, video\, and sculpture. \nFeaturing work by: Carolyn Benedict Fraser\, Travis Townsend\, Juan Madrid\, Jennifer Bacon\, Tayler Parkin\, Barbara Martin\, Coco Spadoni\, Areca Roe\, Diego Morales-Portillo\, and Jessy Earle. \nJuried by Q and June T Sanders. \n

Waters was born in Richmond\, Virginia. She taught herself to be a painter\, learning from other artists in her family and a period of time working as a muralist in Sicily. She exhibited her paintings in group exhibitions in the Metro D.C. area and in Atlanta where she lived prior to moving to Seattle. In only four years in Seattle\, Waters has made an indelible mark on the city’s arts community and the Pioneer Square neighborhood. The move to the neighborhood also shifted Waters’ practice as her life and work began to merge in unexpected ways. In 2013 Waters opened Martyr Sauce: A “renegade” gallery and platform for generating press and attention for marginalized perspectives. \n

SUMMARY:WSU Fine Arts and Museum of Art Visiting Artist Lecture Series presents: Wendy Red Star
DESCRIPTION:Lecture at 6pm in the Fine Arts auditorium (room 5062) \nArtist Wendy Red Star works across disciplines to explore the intersections of Native American ideologies and colonialist structures\, both historically and in contemporary society. Raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in Montana\, Red Star’s work is informed both by her cultural heritage and her engagement with many forms of creative expression\, including photography\, sculpture\, video\, fiber arts\, and performance. An avid researcher of archives and historical narratives\, Red Star seeks to incorporate and recast her research\, offering new and unexpected perspectives in work that is at once inquisitive\, witty and unsettling. Intergenerational collaborative work is integral to her practice\, along with creating a forum for the expression of Native women’s voices in contemporary art. \nhttp://www.wendyredstar.com

SUMMARY:WSU Fine Arts Visiting Artist Lecture Series presents: Kim Stringfellow
DESCRIPTION:Lecture November 9th\, 4:30pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium (room 5062) \nKim Stringfellow is an American artist\, educator\, and photographer based out of Joshua Tree\, California. She is an associate professor at the San Diego State School of Art\, Design\, and Art History and received her MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nStringfellow’s work bridges cultural geography\, public practice and experimental documentary into creative\, socially engaged transmedia experiences that combine writing\, photography\, audio\, video\, installation\, mapping and community engagement. These projects explore history of place while also examining how the landscapes we inhabit are culturally constructed. In particular\, she is interested in the environmental repercussions of human presence and occupation within these spaces. By focusing on distinct subjects\, communities or regions she attempts to foster a discussion of complex\, interrelated issues for each site while attempting to expose human values and political agendas that form our collective understanding of these places. \nhttp://www.kimstringfellow.com
