SUMMARY:Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition - Self•ish: Doug Gast\, Joe Hedges\, and Io Palmer
DESCRIPTION:Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition Self•ish: Doug Gast\, Joe Hedges\, and Io Palmer \nEXHIBITION: August 21 – October 6\, 2018\nRECEPTION: Tuesday\, September 11th\, 12:00-1:30 pm \nLOCATION | The  Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus. Open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, closed Sunday and Monday. For more information please contact the museum at 509-335-1910. \nSelf•ish features the work of Doug Gast (WSU Tri-Cities)\, Joe Hedges (WSU Pullman)\, and Io Palmer (WSU Pullman). Though varied in process and mediums\, all three artists have assembled an exhibition reflecting on a central theme—the formation and depiction of personhood within our multifaceted and progressively digital era. Using his own self-image\, Hedges’ work speaks to fragmented identities through online storage and distortion\, whereas Gast’s project probes the margin of private and public image use across popular image-sharing platforms. Lastly\, the work of Palmer takes a laborious view of a culture’s insatiable appetite for abundant images and adornment. \nSPECIAL EVENT | Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition: Reception and Gallery Talk with Doug Gast\, Joe Hedges and Io Palmer\nDate: Tuesday\, September 11\, 2018\nTime: 12:00-1:30 p.m.\nLocation: Borth Gallery | Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is hosting a reception and gallery talk with faculty artists Doug Gast\, Joe Hedges and Io Palmer on Tuesday\, September 11 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Wright/Harmon and Smith Galleries.  Everyone is welcome! Enjoy an enlightening conversation about the works in the exhibition Selfieflection: Three Artists Reviewing the other and the Self from the perspective of the artists themselves. Reception with light refreshments to follow.

SUMMARY:Visiting Artist: Tariqa Waters
DESCRIPTION:October 4 – 12\, 2018\, Fine Arts Gallery 2\nVisiting Artist Lecture\, October 4\, 4:30pm\, Fine Arts Auditorium 5062\nOpening Reception following lecture\, October 4\, 5:30pm\, Fine Arts Gallery 2 \nTariqa Waters manages a multi-faceted practice as a visual artist\, alternative gallerist\, curator and educator. Waters was born in Richmond\, Virginia. She taught herself to be a painter\, learning from other artists in her family and a period of time working as a muralist in Sicily. She exhibited her paintings in group exhibitions in the Metro D.C. area and in Atlanta where she lived prior to moving to Seattle. In only four years in Seattle\, Waters has made an indelible mark on the city’s arts community and the Pioneer Square neighborhood. The move to the neighborhood also shifted Waters’ practice as her life and work began to merge in unexpected ways. In 2013 Waters opened Martyr Sauce: A “renegade” gallery and platform for generating press and attention for marginalized perspectives. \n

SUMMARY:The Body: Power\, Meaning & Representation in Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, November 15 from 4:30-5:30pm at WSU Fine Arts Gallery 2 \nExhibition opens November 15\, 2018 and runs through January 10\, 2019 \nWashington State University’s Department of Fine Arts presents a juried exhibition exploring ideas about the body. While authority over the human body has long been determined by gender and class\, in today’s highly globalized and pluralistic contemporary art world\, artists view the body as a malleable site of meaning and power\, not as an archetype but as a performative instrument\, a vessel to be filled and surface upon which the artist or viewer may project her own fears\, desires and dreams. Featuring works across various media\, including new media\, photography\, painting\, video\, performance\, sculpture\, installation\, and intermedia. \nSelected artists: Robin Arnitz\, Saskia Baden\, Christy Bailey\, Claire Brandt\, Dylan Collins\, Stephen Deffet\, Nicole Jean Hill\, Mari Nagaoka\, Sophie Neslund\, and Lydia Panas. \nJuried by June T Sanders and Ayanna Z Nayo. \n

SUMMARY:Ab Ex Redux
DESCRIPTION:The Second Annual AbEx Redux Exhibition \nFA 321 Intermediate Painting\n  \nReception January 31\, 4:30pm\nWashington State University\, Locker Gallery | On view January 31\, 2019 through February 22\, 2019 \nThis is an exhibition of works created in Intermediate Painting FA 321. Students were asked to create a painting in the style of a well known modern or contemporary abstract painter. The painters the students drew from created wholly or mostly nonrepresentational (non-objective) works—works that do not have clearly recognizable subjects such as cats\, people or walnuts.  Rather\, the subject of an abstract painting is largely the act of painting itself: and the formal principles of design\, color\, mark-making and the relative thinness or thickness of a painting. The resulting paintings are not necessarily copies but are “master borrows”—borrowing the color palette and approach. Naturally the unique sensibilities of each student shine through as well\, creating paintings that speak both to a shared art historical language as well as individual human idiosyncrasies\, creating a contemporary dialogue about style and tradition.
