SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Series: Letha Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Lecture January 18\, 4:30pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium (FA 5062) \nTurning flat images into sculptural objects\, Letha Wilson’s photographs in relief and site-specific installations draw attention to the relationship between architecture and nature. Shots of American landscapes—reddish canyons\, the ocean\, lush vegetation—are cut and folded like an accordion into wall-hung pieces. With layers of concrete or bases of cement\, Wilson’s works are a manmade contrast to the natural subjects of her prints\, while their final textures also refer back to natural terrains.

SUMMARY:WSU Fine Arts and Museum of Art Visiting Artist Lecture Series presents: Wendy Red Star
DESCRIPTION:Lecture at 6pm in the Fine Arts auditorium (room 5062) \nArtist Wendy Red Star works across disciplines to explore the intersections of Native American ideologies and colonialist structures\, both historically and in contemporary society. Raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in Montana\, Red Star’s work is informed both by her cultural heritage and her engagement with many forms of creative expression\, including photography\, sculpture\, video\, fiber arts\, and performance. An avid researcher of archives and historical narratives\, Red Star seeks to incorporate and recast her research\, offering new and unexpected perspectives in work that is at once inquisitive\, witty and unsettling. Intergenerational collaborative work is integral to her practice\, along with creating a forum for the expression of Native women’s voices in contemporary art. \nhttp://www.wendyredstar.com

SUMMARY:WSU Fine Arts Visiting Artist Lecture Series presents: Kim Stringfellow
DESCRIPTION:Lecture November 9th\, 4:30pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium (room 5062) \nKim Stringfellow is an American artist\, educator\, and photographer based out of Joshua Tree\, California. She is an associate professor at the San Diego State School of Art\, Design\, and Art History and received her MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nStringfellow’s work bridges cultural geography\, public practice and experimental documentary into creative\, socially engaged transmedia experiences that combine writing\, photography\, audio\, video\, installation\, mapping and community engagement. These projects explore history of place while also examining how the landscapes we inhabit are culturally constructed. In particular\, she is interested in the environmental repercussions of human presence and occupation within these spaces. By focusing on distinct subjects\, communities or regions she attempts to foster a discussion of complex\, interrelated issues for each site while attempting to expose human values and political agendas that form our collective understanding of these places. \nhttp://www.kimstringfellow.com

SUMMARY:WSU Fine Arts Visiting Artist Lecture Series presents: Mark Dorf
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Thursday\, October 19th\, 4:30pm in the Fine Arts auditorium (room 5062) \nEmploying a mix of photography and digital media\, Mark Dorf’s work explores the post-analogue experience – society’s interactions with the digital world and its relationship to our natural origins. Dorf scrutinizes and examines the influence of the information age through the combination of photography and digital media\, looking at\, in his most recent works how we encounter\, translate\, and understand our surroundings through the filter of science and technology. Mark seeks to understand our curious habitation of the 21st century world through the juxtaposition of nature and the digital domain. \nhttp://mdorf.com
