Layers, Land, and Labor opens at WSU Fine Arts Locker Gallery

July 12, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Layers, Land, and Labor

New Work from JJ Harty, Michael Yellowbear Holloman, and Krista Brand

Layers, Land, and Labor investigates contemporary landscapes in layers revealing objects, detritus, spirit, and work. Each of the artists featured brings a unique perspective of observation, from the mundane to the metaphysical. JJ Harty’s sculpture looks to reconsider analog and mechanical objects perceived as obsolete as well as spaces found within our decaying infrastructure. Michael Yellowbear Holloman uses color and movement in landscape painting to engage the viewer’s own emotional relationship with the natural world, while invoking color schemes and compositions that reflect on the spiritual and oral traditions of the Plateau tribes of the Columbia river.Krista Brand’s installation, drawings, and ceramic sculpture challenge the viewer to look a little closer, to notice our complicit shuffling of things from one place to the next, and to value the labor of those who maintain objects and places.
