Jacob Riddle Artist Talk & Reception

October 7, 2021 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

The Fine Arts Department presents an exhibition of work by Jacob Riddle, Assistant Professor, Career Track, in Digital Technology and Culture.

Jacob Riddle is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and curator. Jacob’s work deals with ideas surrounding labor, class, automation, value, capital, physicality, virtuality, and the natural world. Jacob has exhibited his work and been Artist in Residence nationally and internationally including Flaggfabrikken, Bergen, Norway; Arteles, Haukijärvi, Finland; Rodbianco, Oslo, Norway; École Supérieure d’Art d’Avignon, Avignon, France; Tele Vision, Sydney Australia; Dom Funkcjonalny, Warsaw, Poland; Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, Babylon Contemporary, Kansas City, Missouri.. Jacob’s work is held in the collections of the Rhizome Art Base at the New Museum and PAMAL at École Supérieure d’Art d’Avignon.

In DPM∧GAN, with generative images of camouflage, Jacob Riddle utilizes technologies designed to mimic the natural world to break down the dichotomy between the natural and technological. These camouflage patterns act as targets that instead of concealing a subject reveal another layer of the work visible through augmented reality.

Disruptive Pattern Material (DPM) is a description of the function of camouflage. Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is a class of machine learning frameworks that is frequently used to generate images. Machine learning is often referred to as artificial intelligence (AI). Both of these technologies began and to some extent are defined by their imitation of the natural world.
